By Fishing Khao Lak.
March 2005:
On the 12th of March Anthony and Andrew from the UK
had a day to remember at Bungsam Lan.
Fishing in the "Pond" they managed a good total of around 20 fish,
the largest being a 20 kg Giant Mekong Catfish.
On the same day Neil Kendal from Merthyr Tydfil Wales came up with
a nice brace of 23 kg Giant Mekong Catfish, but also caught a mixed bag of other fish
including Pacu and Striped Catfish average weight around 16 kg.
"Gecko" came up with a "surprise" catch on the 20th of March
when a massive Manta Ray was hooked up fishing in 92 meters of water.
Usually a plankton feeder, and certainly not one of our target species,
it sucked in our Tuna bait and started a marathon battle that lasted almost 3 hours.
At one point during the fight, the huge ray managed to almost "spool" the reel,
stripping over 600 meters of line off the reel.
The angler eventually managed to raise the fish to the boat side
where it was unhooked and released unharmed. A fantastic specimen
that was approximately 200 kg in weight, with a wingspan of nearly 3 meters!
Also caught on the same trip were 5 Dogtooth Tuna averaging 20 kg,
a big Ruby Snapper and a Red Jobfish. All caught on baited hooks
at a depth of 10–15 meters using "chum".
After their trip to Bungsam Lan, Anthony and Andrew enjoyed a day charter
onboard "Gecko" to Racha Noi and "GT Rock".
Taking their partners with them they split the day into a snorkelling / fishing trip.
The fishing was non–stop action and they managed to catch 40–50 Tuna before lunch!
A short bottom fishing session later in the afternoon produced two table sized Groupers
and Sailfish were spotted in the area, but unfortunately they were not feeding.
On a live aboard trip to Koh Rok 26–28th of March, there was still good Sailfish action
when we had 7 fish on lures, hooked two, released one, and lost one.
Trolling was very productive, taking Dorado´s and many Tuna.
The "Sails" are still around Racha Noi, and "Gecko" had two strikes,
but unfortunately lost both fish.
Many Tuna and an impressive Narrow–barred Spanish Mackerel
were caught whilst trolling on the 24th of March.
Returning to Bungsam Lan for the last day of their holiday,
Anthony and Andrew had another great days fishing when they each took
10–12 Striped and Mekong Catfish averaging 16 kg.
The largest being a 23 kg Giant Mekong Catfish.
Not long after Anthony and Andrew left for the airport,
I landed a 28 kg specimen, just as I was about to wind in the last rod!
