Since the opening of Bangkok Predator Lake, the lake has consistently proved
to be the most prolific Arapaima fishery in Thailand. Other lakes hold bigger
Arapaima, but the stocking of medium sized Arapaima is by far the highest in
Thailand. Our clients’ success rate at Bangkok Predator lake has been
extremely good with around 90% of fly–fishermen all landing at least 1
Arapaima, but more often than not several in a day plus other species such as
Alligator Gar, Giant Snakehead, Cheow Phraya Catfish, Amazon Redtail Catfish,
Asian Redtail Catfish, Pacu and Tiger Catfish.

The lake is located in flat open countryside often with a light wind blowing
and there are bamboo salas around the lake where you can take a break and
enjoy some nice shade from the sun.

Most areas of the lake are clear for back–casting, however lots of strikes are
often very close to the bank where the predators hunt for the bait fish. There
are very few snags in the lake so fighting these huge fish is reasonably problem
free. Arapaima and Alligator Gar have hard bony mouths so a sharp hook and a
good hook set is very important, also make sure you tighten up to the fish
quickly or they will spit the hook.

Equipment has to be a minimum of 9 weight, but I recommend a 10 weight or
higher. Fly–equipment can be provided at an extra charge of 1,000 thb, but if
possible we prefer you to bring your own. Tippets should be around 30lbs
monofilament or fluorocarbon.

The lake varies in depth from around 1.23 meters close in to around 5.5 meters
in the deepest areas. I recommend an intermediate line for most of the fishing,
but a good method that works well is to fish a large black Wooly Bugger type
fly on a floating line close to the surface. Our main fly patterns that we use are
large bait fish streamer types fished at various depths. Many of these
predators are air breathers and will regularly surface to take air. After
breathing the fish will submerge and carry on its way. Often a moving stream
of air bubbles will give away the location of the fish and a well–cast fly timed to
intercept the fish will result in a strike.

The fish are fed several times a day with Tilapia bait fish and around feeding
times usually the strikes come very often and are more aggressive. When an
Arapaima takes a fly, they inhale it rather than biting it, so strike immediately
or they will spit the fly very quickly. The best streamer flies are Tilapia
imitations like the one pictured below.

Another good fly to bring with you is a doubled eyed weighted streamer fished
slowly along the lake bed for the Catfish and other bottom dwellers. The lake
bed is clay and mainly clear of debris.

The owner and staff at the lake are among the friendliest and helpful people
you could ever wish to meet and will do everything they can to make your day
enjoyable and successful. For fly–anglers targeting Arapaima and other big
predators based from Bangkok, there is no better lake to do it and it is very
reasonable priced too!
